Canwyll for Boudicca

Canwyll is Welsh for “candle” and while Boudicca didn’t speak Welsh, the Brythonic language of the Iceni created multiple languages over time. Much like languages change over time, our connection to Boudicca grows and changes in our creation of this candle. The Herbal Tea we created collaboratively contains many of the herbs we will use in our Canwyll for Boudicca, but through an exploration of our individual connections we have discovered a few more that are necessary.

Boudicca Healing Oil

This oil is brought to us by none other than Rayne McLoughlin and it is especially potent. It is one of the additional ingredients needed to create our Black Sacred Candle or Canwyll.

“War is hard. After a long day of kicking ass, you need some relaxation and peace. Try this rub or put some in a bath and call it a day with Boudicca. You’re welcome.’ ~ Rayne

Directions

After you have crafted your healing oil, you will want to add the ingredients from the Herbal Tea, Bay, and Yarrow to your mortar and pestle and grind as finely as you are called to grind it. Now you are ready to create your Canwyll to Boudicca!

  • Take a piece of aluminum foil (large enough to wrap your candle in) and place it on your workspace.
  • Take a piece of non-stick parchment paper (about the same size as your aluminum foil) and place it on top of the aluminum foil.
Trick: Fold the edges of the aluminum foil over the top of the edges of the parchment paper to keep it from rolling!
  • Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  • Inscribe the candle with symbols or sigils that you prefer.
  • Using the Healing Oil, pour around and on top of the candle.
  • Sprinkle your herbs around the candle and then coat the candle as you see fit.

  • Wrap the candle inside the parchment and aluminum foil.
  • Place the wrapped candle in the oven.
  • DO NOT LEAVE THE KITCHEN (lesson learned the hard way), turn your candle every 2 minutes (this took me about 12 minutes total).
  • Pour a little salt into your candle holder.
  • Once your candle is heated and slightly mushy, remove from the oven. Carefully open the foil and let it cool.
  • Nestle your completed Black Sacred Candle within the candle holder.

Caution: Please make sure there are no large chunks of plant material as these can be dangerous or ‘pop’ during candle burning. As always, please abide by all fire safety rules.
