In the Beginning: The Black Sacred Candle (Part 3)

As we open the doors of Dark Goddess Collective, we begin by introducing a series on the Black Sacred Candle. We light it to honor and protect this space so our witch’s work may move forward. This is part three and concludes the series as we throw open the gates! Part one can be found here and part two can be found here. ~ Kaycee

The Earth

My Dark Goddesses hold reign over land, sea, and sky. They are felt on the earthly realm, the cycles of seasons and not just those of the land, but our very own seasons of becoming, of birthing, of releasing, fallowing, and rising again transformed in our next period of growth.   The cycles are everywhere we look. In creating our candle, we can utilize correspondences that live this cycle with us: plant allies.

Of The Earth

The Earth is force into form. Through Air and Fire, creating the condensation or Water that will circulate, that then coagulates into our Earth element. I recreate this by thoughtfully procuring and utilizing plant allies on my candles. In choosing the herbs, flowers, or resins, I think about my intention, the purpose of my working candle, the work I will be doing over the next Lunar month, and any seasonal workings. Many of our plant allies have a spectrum of uses, this is useful when we are working with one candle because we can narrow our choices greatly. We can speak to the herbs as we grind them, coaxing the energy forward to match our intentions.

Helpful Tips:

There are numerous books available on correspondences if you have not yet cultivated a relationship with plants. I recommend writing out key words that match your intention for the Black Sacred Candle. We know for sure: cleansing and protecting your space for magic. Maybe you need a calm clarity and focus in your space. Or maybe you need your candle to fully create a high vibrational energetic container. Whatever the intention, I always choose herbs that care for multiple “key words” and speak to them as I grind them together.

After chanting or speaking to my plants and grinding them together (a mini spell if you will), I bind them to my candle. The candle has been dressed with oil and depending on how finely ground your herbs are, you may be able to roll your candle through the herbs or sprinkle them onto the candle. A simple chant for the binding will work:

Cleansing of Air

A blessing to spark

The Fire and fare

Of Water’s mark

Beginning of Form

The Earth to Fruition

Allies a storm

Bound of intuition

The Fire

Through this entire process, the Fire element has been present as the force behind your own creative energy of birthing and bringing together your Black Sacred Candle. From the spark as you lit your cleansing herbs for your candle to its upcoming completion through lighting the initial flame, your Black Sacred Candle is of fire. Birthed from it and reduced by it as you use it up. Our own history as witches is born of fire, strong enough to walk through flames and come back over and over again to do the work of the witch. The spark is forever within us, placed there by the Dark Goddesses themselves for we are of the Universe too.

Helpful Tips:

The lighting of the initial flame of your Black Sacred Candle is when the full purpose and energy comes to life, it is birthed of your energy and relationship with the elements and correspondences used. It is indeed a gleeful moment to witness your creation, but also the awe-inspiring moment of witnessing its power in your space and prepared to take directions. Say a simple chant, such as the one below, as you light the initial flame of your candle.

With fire it begins

And with fire it ends

This Black Sacred Candle, the flame its initiation

You will protect my space and all of my creation
