The Salves of Bastet

Bastet is an amazing Goddess! Born of Ra and of Isis, she is both solar and nocturnal (much like the cat!). In ancient Egypt, cats were known to traverse the liminal as the go between for humans to the upper world and underworld. I am unbelievably excited to have gotten to collaborate with Juliette S. on crafting a solar and nocturnal salve!

Decadent Day Salve of Bastet with Juliette

Where has this goddess been all my life!  The answer, with me always.  I now have another excuse to continue me deep devotion and love for all things cats. Creating this salve for Dark Goddess Collective and for the Goddess Bastet was so much fun. My goal included melding together the energies from the correspondences of the Goddess Bastet and the sun with some cat energy on a deeper level. I think I have succeeded.

Recipe for the Deeply Decadent Day Salve of Bastet

I used two cold infused oils that absorbed the plant material for three months for my salve, 1/8 cup of each.  One was infused with Calendula and the other Dandelion.  The directions and amounts are from Kaycee’s recipe for salves.

Ingredients:

  • Calendula
  • Dandelion
  • Petals of Black Eyed Susans or Sunflowers
  • Saffron
  • Catnip
  • Frankincense resin
  • Oil (Jojoba, Olive)
  • Frankincense essential oil
  • Vetiver essential oil
  • Beeswax pellets
  • Coconut oil

Directions

To make a salve, start by using low heat in a small pot with a mix of olive oil, double the amount of coconut oil, and double the amount of beeswax. For example, if you use 1 part olive oil, you’ll need 2 parts coconut oil and 2 parts beeswax.

Add the plant spirits to the mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until the ingredients are fully melted and combined, then continue stirring for an additional hour on low heat (without boiling). Add essential oils until at desired scent. Once melted, let the mixture cool slightly and strain it into a small jar. As it cools, the salve will solidify more. If it doesn’t firm up as much as you’d like, you can always reheat it and add a bit more beeswax.

I let my salve cool overnight and was eager to try it this morning when I felt its golden buttery lusciousness. It smelled delightful and soothing without being overpowering. Today, I also set up an altar for Bastet and picked for her a small bouquet of Catnip, Black-Eyed Susan’s, and Calendula. I have always connected with cats and added a few ceramic cats to her altar, along with yellow and red tigers eye, citrine, a gemstone that has a golden luster. I plan on adding a few more personal correspondences to the altar tonight.

Remember to follow your inner gold!

Bastet’s Nocturnal Salve

For Bastet’s Nocturnal Salve, I felt into the idea of ‘seeing in the dark’ or the work we do during the dream time. I wanted something that would connect us deeply to her and to ourselves. The hopes are that this salve allows the liminal transition to be lucid although more freeing. Following the same directions above, below are the ingredients I used.

Ingredients:

  • Frankincense
  • Myrrh
  • Mugwort
  • Sage
  • Damiana
  • Catnip
  • Blue Lotus Petals
  • Egyptian Essential Oil (4 drops)
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Rosehip Oil
  • Beeswax
  • Tiger’s Eye Chips
Tiger’s Eye Chips on the bottom!

My Process

I placed the Tiger’s Eye chips in the bottom of the container that I would be pouring this salve into. Using low heat, the ingredients never came to a boil, but they were macerated within the oils repeatedly to get all of the goodness into those oils. It smells amazing! I also let it cool overnight and then started again on low heat the next day. The second evening I let it cool overnight, heated it on low again for about an hour the next day before straining it into multiple glass jars. Using it on erogenous zones (especially for sacred and sensual touch) and the chakras is proving to be an amazing experience!
