First Woman: A Pandora Anthology

First woman, Pandora, is known in pre-Hellenic myth as a form of Gaia (1). In other stories, the stories that are more well-known, Pandora being made from clay is our first clue to the conflation. From her epithets to myths of first women being sculpted by Gods or from men, we are able to connect with her energy and embrace other powerful truths she reveals to each of us.

Elpis (Hope) by Rayne

To me, Hope means there’s a chance for something unexpected to happen. Hope means magic is possible. Hope is that instinct that we all have when we are in the dark, at our last straws, and ready to let it all fall.

Hope is that part in us keeps us in for one last shot.

If we look at the story of Pandora and see the patriarchal puppetry within it, we can see yet again that we have been cast as powerful, yet dangerous and don’t you forget it always to blame.

My first instinct here is not to be hopeful, I admit to that. I’m just fucking pissed off. Yet… here I am in the DGC and I am safe. Yes, I will say it again. I am safe. I am surrounded by a group of powerful badass women who I love and am loved by with our whole hearts and we do hard and amazing work together all the time.

THAT GIVES ME HOPE.

So much of what I find here gives me hope. Enough to write about for ages. For now, my job is to call In Pandora. I’m choosing to take this opportunity to look at my internalization of the Patriarchy and ask some questions. Because I can’t change the fucking world around me right now, all I can do is change myself and offer up what I am doing to those I love and hope I ripple.

Feel free to use them for exploring as well (don’t forget we have awesome psychopomps to help us through too!).

  • Do I believe my value is tied to how useful, attractive, or accommodating I am to others?
  • Do I feel guilty for taking up space, asking for help, or expressing strong emotions?
  • Do I downplay my intelligence, accomplishments, or spiritual authority to avoid being seen as “too much”?
  • Do I compete with, judge, or distrust other women?
  • Do I feel threatened by women who are louder, freer, more beautiful, or more successful than me?
  • Do I lack deep, supportive sisterhoods where I can be fully seen and safe?
  • In what areas of my life do I still seek permission to be powerful, messy, whole, or fully myself?

Yep… that fucking box is opening and I am letting hope out. There’s enough for everyone. I love you!

Finding the Cracks by Mary

Pandora offers a powerful symbol for healing and transformation. While Pandora’s curiosity unleashed suffering into the world, the presence of Hope within the jar symbolizes resilience: the ability to endure hardship and emerge stronger.

Healing often begins with acknowledging wounds rather than suppressing them. Confronting past struggles allows for growth, much like shadow work or Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold.

Resilience and Rebuilding: Brokenness Does Not Diminish Worth

Transformation through adversity teaches that suffering is not the end, rather it is a catalyst for transformation. Many healing traditions emphasize that challenges shape character, fostering wisdom and emotional depth. The presence of Hope in Pandora’s jar reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is potential for transformation!

Whether in personal healing, ancestral wisdom, or philosophical reflection, embracing imperfections leads to strength. This aligns beautifully with Kintsugi, where fractures are highlighted rather than hidden, reinforcing the idea that scars tell a story of survival.

Kintsugi and Pandora

Kintsugi, meaning “golden joinery,” is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of concealing flaws, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming cracks into golden lines. This philosophy teaches that adversity and imperfections foster resilience, renewal, and deeper beauty in life.

Just as broken pottery is repaired with gold, our struggles shape us into stronger individuals. Kintsugi encourages self-acceptance, reminding us that scars (whether physical, emotional, or symbolic) tell a story of survival and transformation rather than loss.

In ancient Greece, the jars used were often meant to be buried underground. The images we often see do not show Pandora opening a lid to something buried under the ground, giving the understanding that Pandora was given something uniquely unstable to begin with. Her journey would have seen the jar cracked in many places, much like us as we carry forward all of our experiences with us. How can we highlight those places and experiences with the understanding of  their purpose in our becoming? ~ Kaycee

Kintsugi originated in the Muromachi period (1336–1573) and was closely tied to the Japanese tea ceremony, where broken ceramics were repaired rather than discarded. It reflects the idea that imperfections and repairs add to an object’s beauty and history, rather than diminishing its value.

Magic with Kintsugi Principles

Each crack in a vessel becomes a golden path, symbolizing the alchemy of adversity, turning hardship into wisdom. In magic and divination, Kintsugi guides seekers toward self-acceptance, renewal, and spiritual evolution.

Best Practices

Below are spreads inspired by Kintsugi, designed to help navigate healing, growth, and spiritual evolution. Before you begin, take a moment to reacquaint yourself with some best practices:

  • Set a Clear Intention – Before drawing cards, focus on what you seek: healing, transformation, or ancestral wisdom.
  • Create a Sacred Space – Whether lighting candles, meditating, or using crystals, set an environment that enhances your connection to your divination tool of choice.
  • Journal Your Insights – Write down your interpretations, emotions, and patterns that emerge. Over time, this helps track growth and recurring themes.
  • Trust Your Intuition – While traditional meanings are helpful, allow personal insights to shape your reading.
  • Use Complementary Tools – Pair tarot with meditation, shadow work, or affirmations to deepen the healing process.
  • Revisit Readings Over Time – Healing and transformation unfold gradually. Reflect on past readings to see how your journey evolves.

The Transformation Spread

Using the Kintsugi metaphor for personal growth, we begin by identifying our broken pieces: past wounds, traumas, or setbacks that have shaped us.

Acknowledging and accepting these experiences as integral parts of our journey allows us to move forward with awareness and grace.

Healing is a process that requires patience and self-compassion, reminding us that transformation takes time. Finally, stepping into our authentic selves means embracing imperfections and celebrating our unique paths, recognizing that every fractured piece contributes to the wholeness of who we are.

  • The Old Form – What part of yourself is ready for transformation?
  • The Fracture – What challenge or obstacle is pushing you toward change?
  • The Gold Binding – What strength or wisdom will help you rebuild?

Summer Solstice Ritual with Pandora

We had an amazing Summer Solstice Ritual with Pandora. The amazing thing about ritual with the collective is the amount of energy we raise together and release in sacred belongingness. While the Solstice has passed, you may find yourself wishing to use this in the future. Feel free to add to it (or take what works), but remember your magic and connection to Pandora are unique to you!
