Creating a candle for Rhiannon to call in on the New Moon was absolutely delicious. In sitting in a place of calm awareness, I was able to allow a type of energetic expression to flow and connect with deeper intuitive knowing from the heartspace. I went to my apothecary and allowed herbs and oils to come forward that wanted to support the journey this month.
Never made a Black Sacred Candle before? No worries, we’ve got you here.

Create the Symphony
Our plant spirits love to support us and they do so in reciprocity for the care, cultivation, and relationships we’ve created with them.
It’s a major part of my life, not just my witchcraft.
Place your resin in the mortar and pestle first. Add in the Mugwort, Sage, and Eyebright. Speak to them, listen to them, and intuit what information and support they offer during this time. Guide them appropriately to draw out additional support for any intuitive knowing you may have.
While a purpose of the candle is protection and cleansing for the space in which it is lit, it really is so much more!

Begin to mix, crush, and break them down in the mortar and pestle. It is a little symphony you are creating and you are the conductor that brings it all together.
Take your time with them.
Directions
- Take a piece of aluminum foil (large enough to wrap your candle in) and place it on your workspace.
- Take a piece of non-stick parchment paper (about the same size as your aluminum foil) and place it on top of the aluminum foil. Trick: Fold the edges of the aluminum foil over the top of the edges of the parchment paper to keep it from rolling!
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
- Over your parchment paper, carve your candle carefully with any symbols she has given to you.
- Using your oil, place a drop or two upon the candle.
- Add your herbs to the candle.
- Wrap your candle tightly and place the wrapped candle in the oven.
- DO NOT LEAVE THE KITCHEN (lesson learned the hard way), turn your candle every 2 minutes (this took me about 12 minutes total).
- Pour salt into your candle holder and sprinkle Calendula petals on top.
- Nestle your completed Black Sacred Candle within the candle holder.
- Light it a moment and speak or chant to Rhiannon for a moment, then snuff it out.
- Place your Black Sacred Candle upon your New Moon altar and light it when the first sliver appears!
Caution: Please make sure there are no large chunks of plant material as these can be dangerous or ‘pop’ during candle burning. As always, please abide by all fire safety rules.
